Introduction

Music has always been a huge part of my life. Growing up, it was my only relief that kept me going amongst all the chaos. I was left in the care of my grandparents most of my childhood due to separated parents. Although I love my now passed on grandparents, they did have some funky old school Catholic rules. One of these rules was regarding music. They encouraged instruments, but listening to music was generally not allowed, with the exception of Bing Crosby during Christmas time, of course. So knowing how deaf my grandparents were, my brother and I found ways around this rule. One way we enjoyed music was by turning the volume down extremely low while riding in her car or when she was doing the dishes after dinner, as she kept a stereo in the music room.

However, I was fortunate enough to have parents who loved music as much as I did. Although I still have memories of being caught and yelled at for listening to music under my dad's care, he did introduce us to a lot of his own music. Some of his favorite bands were Rush, KISS, Journey, BlackHawk, and Lonestar. So he exposed me to a lot of classic rock and country, as I'm sure most dads do. My mom, on the other hand, was my hero when it came to music. She didn't care what I listened to and would enjoy almost any music with me. She actually bought me my first ever CD for Christmas in 2012, Kesha's Warrior album, which I still have. My mom exposed me to Artists such as Bob Marley, Stevie Nicks, Creed, The Emotions, and Kool & The Gang. I'm also forever attached to Matchbox 20's album, Yourself or Someone Like You, as she definitely burned a hole in that CD from how much she listened to it when I was young.

My music taste developed from my parents, as well as family members, and then finally became my own in my teenage years. I now enjoy almost everything and push myself to expand my taste even further because there's just so much out there and only one lifetime to hear it all. It's extremely hard to pick one song that I enjoy, so I chose three that I think somewhat represent my overall music taste.

  3. I believe that its absolutely amazing how music was such an outlet for you, especially from rules imposed because of religion and others beliefs. Music has meant the same to me in many ways. I also love Sprits by the Strumbellas!
